Im not sure I am aware of what you are referring to with managed and unmanaged VDS. I rent through tragicservers so would he be the one who has to get all of this information? If so I will pass your message to him.

I just went into phpmyadmin and the url of the page is https://box794.bluehost.com:2083/3rdparty/phpMyAdmin So I imagine that verifies the database is on the same box as the webserver.

Are you sure the mysql server is on the same box as the web host? Does cPanel give you a different mysql IP address in the left pane of the main page? I can't remember if it will show this, perhaps check phpmyadmin and see if it says localhost, and check the domain you are on when using phpmyadmin....
