Some machines and server configurations can handle more than others. Any exceptions would need to be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Usually it's not a problem for us to authorize a bit more. The main concern is that it may break backups/moves or fill up an SSD. We always have to think about the fact that servers are duplicated at least twice, in a local backup and a remote backup (which takes space on both ends), and that they h...

It could be a bug in the game. If so, it would be worth letting Valve know. Is the server FPS dipping when this happens (and CPU usage jumping)?

We don't install non-routable IPv4 addresses and most games do not support IPv6. If a game starts supporting IPv6, you may need to set the IP address manually.
