DDoS attacks, BF NYE/Chicago, 2/2016

Post by BizSAR »

The DD0S attacks mentioned in the server events sent Feb 25th are getting worse. Our BF servers have dumped their users at least twice already today (while still staying up, reporting disconnections with the users as the only issue). Is there any end in sight? This is getting ridiculous.

We're working with our upstream provider to ensure that link between NY and Chicago gets upgraded. They have not provided us with a direct ETA on when this will occur, but we will continue pushing them for this. We've also asked that Rackspace(the place that host Blaze) peer directly with us in Chicago to help alleviate issues like this.

It's important to note here, that things like this unfortunately happen from time to time. Generally, the damage is fairly limited, but specifically in the case of any game that uses Plasma/Blaze they see the worse effects. The ultimate fix needs to come from Dice/EA. A few seconds of packet loss, especially for a global connection like Blaze should not cause servers to entirely dump their players.

@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

It seems to be just that one internal TSIC upstream link that's problematic and we're pushing them to fix it quickly. We also have other transit coming online to compensate if they fail to do so, and we're juggling things around to try to work around it in an even shorter term, such as by increasing our system's detection to loss over that path and issuing null-routes more quickly if it is seen.

It's unfortunate that the ISP hosting Blaze is choosing that particular path. If they were like Internap and had a route optimization product that saw packet loss, they would reroute and use one of the many other ways to reach us in Chicago. They could also choose to peer with us directly in Chicago. The Blaze ISP does not seem to care a whole lot about performance.
