You have to PAY for FTP access?

This is used for general discussion that is not necessarily server-related.

You have to PAY for FTP access?

Post by $ynthetiK »

You have to PAY for FTP access? What is that crap? I like the pings and testimonials of your servers, but why in god's name do you have to pay for MORE for Higher FTP access? It doesn't cost you anything, and it doesn't take you longer to set up. Plz someone explain this to me. Because it has be baffled.

Originally we charged for FTP access purely because it degrades server performance. As you know, all files on a server that aren't specific to that server are hardlinked, which is one big reason why level load times for standard maps is so fast. When someone uploads a custom map, that map will typically not be in the cache when it is loaded, making the server take longer to load it. When a map is loading, the overall performance of the machine is degraded. So, because custom maps were/are considered more luxury than necessity, we decided we should allow those who didn't need them to pay less, since their servers were less demanding. It makes sense.

FTP level 2 and the ability to add metamod plugins was added later. Many plugins, especially HLGuard and LogD, have high CPU usage requirements and therefore take more resources. Therefore, level 2 had to cost more than level 1, to make it fair to those people who didn't need them.

Of course, now that at least one league frequently uses custom maps to play with, just about everyone needs at least FTP level 1. And then on top of that, many leagues require WWCL, which makes even private servers require FTP level 2. This has the unfortunate consequence that just about every active clan wanting a private match server ends up paying for FTP level 2. And most public servers want it as well, just as a matter of course.

So maybe you're right, and we should just raise the base price of all servers, and get rid of the FTP levels entirely. This would make things simpler for you, and it'd save me the trouble of having to explain it. However, it would make our prices higher for those few people who still don't need such options.

And the server would still come out around the same price to you in the end.

Moved to general due to the fact this is a general question from a non-customer.
