Question about a server box.

This is used for general discussion that is not necessarily server-related.

Question about a server box.

Post by Kropp »

I was wondering since I dont know prices how much should this be worth it.

Specs:
2 x 3.0 GHZ Intel Xeon Processors
1 x 8MB Intel Video (CPU Accelerator) GPU
1 x HP 6i RAID controller (Amazing controller!)
3 x 72.8GB 10k RPM Drives
4GB SDRAM (333MHZ)
2 x Redundant 600(I think) Watt PSU's
Windows 7 Pro x64

How much do you think this is worth.

What is the exact CPU? That is what will most likely determine the main price.

Yes, that would be the series but you would need the exact CPU model, so you could check prices.

If you're seeing that advertised as a dedicated server, I would stay away from it. The fact that they're not telling you the CPU model is a bad sign, that's a very small amount of RAM by today's standards (and slow, to boot), those are going to be old and slow hard drives, and Windows 7 is not a server OS (and not legal to resell!).

The last dual Intel CPU that we used here which was 3.0ghz was the Xeon 5060. We flushed all of those old boxes from our network a year or two ago because they were long past their expiration date and couldn't handle modern games (they also use a ton of power).

For a machine like that, $20-$50 a month might be considered fair.

(A 2-core VDS here would likely be noticeably faster than this machine, actually.)

If you want to purchase used hardware, I could potentially get you some newer and much better stuff that we've retired. I just recycled a bunch of machines with essentially the same specs that you just quoted, since they have no resale value when they're this old :).

We'll need to know the model to know for certain, but if it's an Intel 5060, that was released in 2006, I believe. If his machine is a year old, he likely means that he bought it a year ago, used.

That doesn't appear to correspond with what he said -- he may have just Googled a machine =\.

I would not trust this guy. No modern machine should have 333mhz RAM or only 4 GB of it, and nobody should be using spinner drives that small. I literally did just send many drives like that off for shredding last week, since anything smaller than 500 GB has no real value used.

If you open up a support request, we can talk more about that. I just got rid of a couple of hundred, but we retire old machines all the time and I'll have more collecting up.

I wouldn't recommend these servers for home use, since 1u servers are loud and kind of unwieldy.

This would really just be for running a small server for a friend or two.

And maybe a server for me.

Were you planning to colocate it or run it from home?

A VDS might end up being a better deal, honestly.

I already rent a dedicated and most likely still would just I just want a price range etc and it would just be running little things not like 200-300 people.

Not to mention I opened a support request.

Like John said, you don't want to run a 1U in your house. They get hot, they are loud, and they consume a ton of power. I now have two 1U's (Poweredge R410, X336) in my own cabinet I made (Pics are in another thread somewhere) and it's extremely loud, and hot. Thankfully the room the cabinet in is an unfinished room, so I could run some lines for a descent AC unit to keep the room cooler. You can still hear everything running to about half the house, but it doesn't bother me personally. Better off renting a VDS from NFO, it's the easiest solution, plus dealing with your own hardware isn't always so smooth.
