need help to edit windows registry on server 2012

Post by chrispottsov1987 »

I run a virtual server with nfo, and use it to host a game server.

I have managed to set up the game to auto run when ever I log in to the virtual server. However I would like to be able to make the game server run automatically without the need for an admin to log onto the virtual server. This is just to make things easier.

I have found out how to do this from a post on the microsoft website, but this was for a 2003 server, and I am running a 2012 server. Although promised that "Nothing has changed" with regards to getting this process to work, it does require me to edit the windows registry to add the game server to the run at startup list in the registry. This is further complicated by the fact that I can not find the ""Windows NT Resource Kit"" on my server.

All the information I have got so far is from the following link,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137890

Sorry if posting to off site topics is against any rules, I just wanted to make sure you knew the same as I did to aid in implimenting this.

I will also point out that I am not a major PC nerd, so please use simply terms. Would rather have any replies over simplified than overly complicated.

thank you for any assistence you can offer.

Open up a run command and type 'control userpasswords2'

From this page you should be able to configure the account to automatically log into.

I thank you for the suggestion, but this does not help me.

The problem is not that i need to enter any password to connect to the server, which I dont, because i never set up an admin password on the server. Only the one for remote conection.

The problem is i need to connect at all to the VDS in order for my program to run. I want to make it so it will do this without me or any one else needing to first log on to the server.

Only altering the registry seems to do this, hence my plea for help. NFO must already use a system simular to this in order to host their managed servers. I simply need some help setting this up on my un-managed server.

N.b. I am running ARMA 3 so renting a managed server at this point is impossible.

It sounds like you want to run your ARMA 3 server as a Windows service. There are a few free programs that allow you to run an application as a service such as Non-Sucking Service Manager (http://nssm.cc/) and ServiceEx (http://serviceex.com/). If you would like to take the commercial route, you can buy a Firedaemon license (http://www.firedaemon.com/) which is more fully featured.

EZUGCC also has a free version or full version for $25 a year.
You can set the server to restart once a day at whatever time you set.
Servers restart on server crash or if you restart the entire box/vps, the server is started up automatically.

Thank you for the help.

Was looking at doing this manually, however the programs suggested offer better results and more options than I could manage from editing the registry myself.
