HTTP Fast Asset Downloading and .res files?

Post by Bloodspitter »

Hello. I am trying to get some custom maps working on my server and have checked and doublechecked the directories and filepaths, uploaded everything to both the gameserver and the webspace. Some maps seem to work fine, so I know the basic approach is working. :)

Having trouble with cs_nakazumi. It gives me this error after dropping me:

"Mod_NumForName: cannot find model/cs_nakazumi/pwg7_chopt.mdl"

I've tried creating a .res file called cs_nakazumi.res in the /maps folder which contains the missing filepath and model and uploaded it to server and webspace, restarted the server and tried again... same result.

What am I doing wrong? I'm not familiar with the whole .res file fix. Any help appreciated!
:)

ok I looked into the problem and the res file wasnt created correctly.

the res file is not a folder, but something you can use a text editor to create, but you must save as mapname.res

If you look in your maps folder on your gameserver now, you will see cs_nakazumi.res with the missing model filepath in there. If there are other missing models or errors, simply download this res file, edit using notepad or wordpad, add the other filepaths, save and reupload.

Let me know how it turns out. You got a bunch of good custom maps :)

Thanks for the assistance, but it is still doing the same thing. I uploaded the cs_nakazumi.res file onto the webspace too, and reactivated FAD to see if it would do it's thing for me when I joined, but no luck. I am disabling FAD until I know what is going on- seems very buggy.

Custom maps are our specialty on FR6. :D
I keep them all zipped on the webpage, and when I unzip the file manually it works fine. Until this problem is addressed, there is no sense enabling FAD on the server and it's back to downloading them individually I guess.

Thanks for the help. If you have another idea let me know.

You still don't have it in there right ;). You have it as

model/cs_nakazumi/pwg7_chopt.mdl

When in reality it should be

models/cs_nakazumi/pwg7_chopt.mdl

Ah, thanks. Too burned out to continue at the moment. I will pick up where I left off in the morning. :)

Will this also work for the missing vegas.wad file on some maps?

OK, coffee in the mug, ready to try again. :)
Thanks for your help on this guys!

cs_crest...

It came with a .res file, which contains the de_vegas.wad, but people are still dropping because of that missing .wad file which if I understand this right the .res file is supposed to fix?

If I try to find the de_vegas.wad file in the server directory it is invisible because that is a standard map (right?). If I try to upload my copy of the de_vegas.wad it tells me "upload not allowed".

Well, maybe I fixed it. 8O
I opened the .res file the map came with, took out the extra text (author's name, etc.) and left in only the pertinent contents, deleted all the cs_crest files from my system, made sure they were on both the server and the webspace (including the remade .res file), and it worked.

I am testing each map individually as recommended. Is it very common that some people have no problems and others have many? Do most custom maps have these kinds of problems? Would it be easier to just have people download the full map files in a zip from the webspace and manually install them, just to make 100% sure they have all the files they need?

/weighs pros and cons of FAD, continues to experiment... :)

Just to make sure I'm doing this right: the .res file (along with every other file the map needs) must be on BOTH the server AND the webspace, correct?

Thanks again! I'll continue to check this thread today...

that sounds right. if "FAD" doesnt work, HL will resort to the 'trickle' (dl from server) method. or at least its supposed to  .

I would download and install this

http://files.nfoe.net/download.php?fnam ... r_v2_1.zip

you can use our webhosting to run it, it tracks files quite nicely.

:?

I set up these 2 maps and tried to get them through FAD:
cs_thunder
de_heat

First try on cs_thunder kicked me out and said it could not open the cs_thunder.wad file, even though I already made and uploaded a cs_thunder.res file with the cs_thunder.wad directory inside it in anticipation of that very problem.

I haven't tried it with de_heat (which also utilizes a de_heat.wad and for which I have already made a de_heat.res file).

So it must be something obvious, but what am I doing wrong this time? Created the .res files using notepad, checked and doublechecked everything... what gives?

Does it take awhile for the server to update?

de_heat worked the first time
de_night worked after 2 or 3 tries

I'm not sure how they implement sv_downloadurl so I have no idea. But restarting the server should always reset it.

I tend to get a lot of maps that have .res files from the author but learn that other files are needed besides the ones listed in the res files. Some maps are compiled with the needed files hardcoded into the map itself, which is why some maps will automatically try and download needed files when a .res file isn't present.

Since this can be a problem, I always run my maps through a program called ResGen. ResGen can be found at http://www.unitedadmins.com/resgen.php

Be sure to read all documentaion, because it can be tricky to use.
