Section 8

Post by BnD|Sleeper »

Hey,

Are y'all ever going to support Section 8 for Xbox 360 dedicated servers? It's based off the Unreal Tournament engine and from what I have heard, dedicated servers should be available for purchase (maybe?) and am wondering if you ever caught wind of that.

Thanks,

Your wording confused me for a second and I thought you were asking as though somebody else already did support it! But nobody does, of course, as it has not yet been released.

I'm familiar with those rumors also, but without the dedicated server in-hand it's not possible to say whether it's supportable. On September 1, I will purchase the PC version and may have a better answer for you then (depending on whether they include it on the DVD or not).

Sometimes developers base their games off an old version of the UT3 engine that does not include Epic's later fixes for multihoming, user configuration files, etc, and I am hoping that will not be the case here. I am also hoping that Epic worked with them to keep in the querying engine; they left that out of the PS3 UT3 dedicated server.

Section 8 definitely has a dedicated server feature as I am setting up my machine right now using it :-). But since you need to make money, here's the link to find the details for it: http://forums.timegate.com/cmps_index.p ... id=xserver

You obviously will need to contact them (highly likely to pay them for licensing and/or verify you are a company looking to sell the game servers).

Any news on hosting Section 8 and how much it will cost for us to buy?

It's quite lite on the resources from my gathering even with Bots.

They contacted me back and said that they would have more information available soon. Apparently it's not possible to "bulk host" it quite yet.

They stopped responding to my requests. I'm going to continue to try to get a response, but it doesn't look like they're taking this very seriously.

In the meantime, if you already have a server set up at home, it might work well to transfer it to a VDS here: https://www.nfoservers.com/order-virtua ... server.php. These work very well for servers that we can't offer (and for just about any purpose in general).

Apparently this is a large backlog of GSPs trying to get into the program. Not sure if it's true, but it's what the birdie told me.

I'm impatient though so make some phone calls forcefully as we [my clan] want a ranked server (make it reasonably priced please as we're not made of money).

I don't really have anyone I can call over there right now, but I can try digging around in their phone tree on Monday.

There aren't very many "large" GSPs in the US right now, but I guess if you're not familiar with the industry, it would be hard to tell who is and who isn't in that group.

Unfortunately there is a GSP I found that offers ranked Xbox 360 Section 8 servers.

AWOC, who I believe you know the acronym stands for.

I'm not too surprised that another company or two knows someone on the inside who could grease the skids for them. I'm on the outside, unfortunately, so I'm still waiting.

BF2 worked similarly. Tons of tiny GSPs were created just to run BF2 servers and were somehow able to get into their ranked program, while EA wouldn't return my calls. At the time, we were probably the largest US GSP (and probably still are the largest US-exclusive one). Maybe they just didn't like our name..

It's really in the publisher's best interest to let whoever wants to run a server, run one -- ranked or not, GSP or not. Activision figured that out with the CODx games and it has worked very, very well for them.

If it makes you feel any better, I love the name. In fact, I'd call you back before I'd call anyone else back just because I like the name.

Granted I also am and have always been interested in nuclear materials (and weapons) so no surprise there... Considering my avatar is a rendered image of a nuke blast.

Anyways, AWOC may be claiming to have ranked 360 servers and they are just pre-ordered or like we both think, they have an 'in' inside the company.

Either way, I'm waiting until you get S8 Ranked and hoping it'll be reasonable so I won't have to go to another host.

Because God only knows how much I love Nuclear Fallouts...

It's unfortunate y'all still don't have servers. At this rate of getting S8 servers, we will not even want an S8 server nor will anyone else, lol.

Yup, very true -- the game will fall on its face if quality providers can't sell them, and people can't run their own ranked servers.

Many games nowadays are meant to make a quick buck more than to establish communities and a brand. If this is one of those, that's unfortunate.
