Four Core 4gig of ram - Under performing

Post by cuteclaire »

I have one Four core: Perfect for 4-12 game servers or many sites.
Four full, dedicated HT CPU cores (Nehalem or better)
4096 MB of RAM
400 GB of RAID-protected storage
16000 GB of bandwidth transfer

We ran a test on it

the Fist Full Of frag had 16/20 players

the othe servers were locked and empty.

We then went on the 32 slot death match server but only 18 players

The test lasted for 30 mins and the dedicated give a load of 80% for the whole test. Very disapointing.

Has any one else experienced a VDS that seems to under perform?

Did you look at the overall VDS usage and not the server usage? Server usage will seemingly be higher since it's normalized, so 80% is 80% of a core and not the entire VDS.

Do you have other servers on your VDS that were also running at the time? If so, were those idling or did they have players in them?

Your post doesn't give much information.

What CPU were you placed on?

What are you using to measure CPU usage?

What is the tickrate of your server(s)? FoF can go up to 128 tick, which uses a LOT of CPU.

Hi

The processor is what ever NFO have used, Four full, dedicated HT CPU cores (Nehalem or better) dont know exactly what the processor is.

All the other servers were empty and idling except a fistfull of frags which has 16 out of 20.

The Global Offensive are set to 128 tick Fist Full of Frag is what ever is the standard setup.

All the data was taken from NFO's web site.

I will re test and take more detailed processor and memory from the VDS

You can view the processor model number on the "Server Health" tab of any game server on the VDS.

18 players on a DM server at 128 tick will use an entire core on the VDS.

It is important to note where you are looking at CPU usage. If you are looking on the "Status" tab of the control panel you will see overall CPU usage, if you look at the "Server Usage" tab of a game server, you will see normalized CPU usage, which shows usage of a core. For example if you saw 80% on the Server Usage tab, that is perfectly normal for a game server with a decent amount of players.

If this is a VDS/VPS the entirety of the 4GB of ram is to the machine as a whole, not entirely dedicated to the game.

I.E. The system wants to use .5gb of ram to run background services, only 3.5GB remain to be used to the server, if it's allocated.

You also have to keep in mind that there is generally a 3-5% CPU usage for virtual overhead. When we switched from a VDS to a full machine, the difference in performance was mind blowing. Went from 8 core VDS to a 8 core full machine. Like night and day.
