On a Linux distribution, it's usually easiest/best to use the regular open-source Perl version, which is included in Ubuntu out of the box. Do you need a specific feature that the ActivePerl flavor provides?

You may have been reading a tutorial meant for Windows. On Windows, ActivePerl is the easiest way to get up and running with Perl. On Linux, you don't usually need to do anything special.

It has been ages since I've had to install HLStatsX:CE by hand, personally. I don't think it was very complicated, though.

make sure that you have the correct logaddress_add entry on your game server.

That message means the hlstats deamon has not recieved any data from the game server.

Run this on your server: logaddress_list, and post the output.
