VDS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, is it safe to upgrade?

Post by rivanor »

Hi, I've got a VDS still running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I've been scared to upgrade because the last time I upgraded to 12.04 LTS from the previous LTS (10.04 or something), the upgrade failed and I had to do a complete reinstall from scratch. Does anyone know if the upgrade path to the latest LTS is known to have worked for any other customers?

I've had good success with my upgrades from 12.04 to 14.04 in the past. Some server applications might need slight tweaks to work or if you are running old programs they might not run or compile on the new version, so you might make sure all your programs are compatible with a new version before you upgrade. Be sure to backup if at all possible, then you can simply run do-release-upgrade assuming you have the right package installed. See ubuntu's article on the upgrade process if you are not familiar with it. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/Rele ... untu_13.10
