Dedicated Servers - Unmetered Traffic

Post by M4sterK3nny »

Can someone explain how / if possible dedicated servers can be unmetered? What are the down/uplink speeds I should expect from a dedicated server say 100 miles from my location?

Cheers! :D

We don't currently have a program for that, but our machines include such a large amount of traffic that it's very hard to reach it. You'd likely have to be doing at least a few hundred megabits per second constantly to reach the allotted amount on an E-2186G, for instance. We have seen several clients saturate their 1 Gbps adapters for significant fractions of the month without needing to pay an overage.

Machines have 1 Gbps adapters and are not limited in any way on our end. Your personal transfer speed to or from the server would be determined by a variety of factors such as whether your ISP is overloaded at any point of its infrastructure, how many simultaneous TCP transfers you are testing with, the TCP window sizes being used, the overall latency, and so on.

If you have a need for raw, unmetered bandwidth, you might consider a VDS instead of a full machine, as they include even more bandwidth and have an unmetered option. A VDS would work extremely well for file serving, for instance.
