Looking to switch providers

Post by JayCat »

Hey John,
We have had our clan servers running on another provider for a while and have had problems with it randomly crashing on us. We have gone through the standard blame game of "It must be your plugins"

We got it down to the basics of the following:
MMS 1.8
Sourcemod 1.3
Socket 3.0.0 alpha
Kigen's Anti Cheat

We are still having issues with the server crashing. We are looking to change our provider and are looking at you.

We are not looking to run a bunch of plugins but would like stuff like:
sm_cash
sm_skinchooser
weapon_restrict
spraytrace

These are the main plugins that we want running. What did you think?

The crashing problem could be Kigen, you running the socket version or the non socket?
My server use to crash when I use to use Kigen, once I switched to the non socket version it ran fine without crashing.

You should definitely give NFo a try, their support is A+, their servers are amazing, plus Internap bandwidth gives you the lowest latency one can ever ask.
Their control panel is awesome, nothing like the cheap/crappy TCAdmin panel, this panel basically makes your life 100 times easier.
If you are not convinced, just rent out one of their servers for 2 days (free trial) and if you are not happy you can cancel it without being charged a dime.

I've been with NFo for many years, and I love them.

Here is a list of plugins I run:

Thanks for your help, IcEWoLF :).

JayCat, unfortunately it's very difficult to troubleshoot your server as it is now, since we aren't hosting it. But, I would definitely recommend trying without plugins entirely, or with just the base SourceMod install if you absolutely need it, to rule them out before you look at anything else. Also, have your provider turn on -condebug for you so that you can get the full log output -- this would let you see much more easily whether it's a plugin.

The main things that wouldn't show in the condebug log would be messages about it being crashed by the rcon exploit (one that is becoming more and more prevalent). When that exploit is used, it only shows up in the "true" server console, and not in any logs. For our Linux servers, we have a system that captures that true output and bans anyone who uses the rcon exploit on a server automatically.

Thanks for your quick replies. We did try pretty much everything. We even had our scrim server crash with a mdmp file. It was a stock css install without sm intalled at all.

Anyway, after reading the forums here and seeing the good and the bad posts, we have decided to give you guys a shot at our business.

Last night we started our account of the 4 core vds package. I guess that I am so used to using tcadmin that I am so confused on doing everything. I can't see anywhere that tells you how to ftp into our server.

Is there a phone number that we could call to get some basic help to get things started?

Oh, and yes I was using the sockets version of kac.

For virtual dedicated serves, we provide extensive software help through a dedicated forum here: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=44.

I wouldn't recommend running an FTP server unless you need to give access to someone other than the owner -- I say that because you can just upload files through Remote Desktop or SFTP (depending on the OS) instead, or just download them directly to the VDS. If you'd prefer to run FTP, though, I would suggest going with FileZilla: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =44&t=4098

Thanks. I got filezilla running on the server and am in the process of uploading our files. It took me a bit to figure it out but it looks like we are ok for now.

Thanks for you help and I will post again if I need more help.

Well we did have a mdmp file show up this morning on the server after running for three days. I guess I could go back and run the older 1.1.9 no sockets version of kac. I will be giving up some of the newer features.

Sad face.

There are so many exploits in CS:S right now that it's tough to say whether your version of KAC was really the culprit. Did a console log suggest this?

Are you running any of the anti-exploit plugins and techniques mentioned here?

Re: Looking to switch providers

Sorry for posting another reply so soon but it turns out that it crashed again after I made those changes but before I made the above post. This time it made 2 mdmp files. One of them is huge, about 9MB.

Also, I am not sure if this is related but I had HLSW open and down in the task bar I had an error.

15:42:36 Error in CHLSWSocketxxxxx(10055) An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer.

I am unsure if that was an error from HLSW from losing connection with the server or if it was an error from the server.

That one looks like it was a HLSW-specific error.

Did anything show in the streaming logs, though? What were the last few log entries?
