CS:GO Dedicated server crashing on startup

Post by JayCat »

So I am trying to get a server up and running and am having problems.

This is on a Windows 2008 R2 server.
I followed the instructions here.
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wik ... ed_Servers

When I do the app_update part, it will lock up the server after about 40% and I have to reboot from my CP. When I get back in and start it again it will continue where it left off and complete after 3 or 4 times of it locking up.

Then when I do get all of the files updated and go to start the gameserver, it will try to start and then crash at start up.

I even re-installed the OS and tried it from scratch with the same results.

Has anyone else have this happen to them? Any suggestions?

I have heard two other people say that this happened to them, but I have not been able to replicate it myself yet. My suspicion is that might be due to running out of memory -- do you have a single-core VDS?

Yes it is a single core vds.

If it is a memory issue, maybe you could upgrade me to 2GB for free.

I would really recommend running 2 CPU cores and plenty of RAM for newer games or multiple servers anyhow, as they often need multiple processors to perform well, and it's common now for games to need a few hundred MB of memory per instance.

It is also possible that the problem is something else -- I haven't been able to repro it yet, so I can't say for certain.

Edit: I just reproduced the problem with a test server running 1 GB of RAM. When upgraded to 2 GB, the server downloads properly. So this could indeed be linked to running out of memory for either the OS or network/disk buffers.

Thanks for the info.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 X64 and was able to install and run the CS:GO server just fine.

Once again thanks for all the help.

I am running the 2 Core VDS package with 2 GB RAM and am running into this problem as well. My VDS crashes at random points while trying to update my CS:GO DS installation. Once, it restarted the server successfully after it happened but mostly I've had to stop then start the server back up through the NFO CP. All throughout each crash, I've actually successfully downloaded the whole CS:GO DS installation.

Nevermind! It looks like it just tricked me when it said installation updated successfully! I'm still trying to successfully download the whole thing. I was watching and the memory usage stayed around 700 MB but the CPU usage was unusually high. The usage was at 67% when the system crashed.

Well, I think that I've actually got it all downloaded now. But what about when there's a server update? Will I possibly have to keep going through this? It seems that these VDS's and SteamCMD do not like each other...

The only time that I was able to reproduce this myself, it was on a 1-core VDS. I upgraded that VDS to 2 GB of RAM (without changing anything else) and it worked as it should, suggesting that it was a problem with memory in some way. Did you have low free memory when the reboot occurred?

If it occurs regardless of the memory situation, and it's reproducible, please open a support request, and we can try the latest version of Xen and latest GPLPV drivers. If those don't work, we can involve the author of the drivers.

No, after the reboot I seem to recall the memory being fine.

If it continues to happen with each subsequent update, I'll definitely put in a ticket with any of my findings included.

Is this still a problem with our VDS's and SteamCMD? Preorders are starting tomorrow which I believe means an open beta and an update. Don't want my VDS constantly crashing again whilst trying to update the game server.

I keep getting interrupted with other work (like attacks against customers). I will try to investigate further today.

I reproduced it with nexiuz and have emailed the GPLPV driver author. I hope that he can provide some insight.
