Question regarding VDS, E5-2690, and turbo
I was under the impression that these CPUs allow turbo but I never see the CPU go over 2.9GHz. I am using CPU-Z to monitor it. Is there a way to enable turbo on a VDS or no?
Re: Question regarding VDS, E5-2690, and turbo
Turbo is automatically enabled and used by the hypervisor. The CPU speed is presented to your VDS as constant, but it is actually dynamic.
Interestingly, you won't actually see higher than 2901 MHz in CPU-Z, even on a bare-metal machine. That is because Intel doesn't report the speed the CPU is running at when it is beyond the standard clock speed (only that it is in turbo mode, by adding an extra MHz, going from 2900 to 2901 in your case). I spoke to Intel engineers who told me that this is behavior is by design.
