Over the years, a few Windows updates have messed with fonts and caused this problem. A couple of older ones that mentioned it:

http://support.microsoft.com/KB/2908190 (applies to Windows 2008 R2)
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/837583 is another (applies to Windows 2003)

Most recently, a Windows update released in August 2014 that caused this issue to start occurring again frequently: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791. Supposedly the problem was fixed by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2993651, but it's not clear that this is true.

If you see this error, we recommend checking that http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2993651 has been applied. If it has, try removing it and then re-applying it through Windows update. If the problem isn't resolved by this, and you're running Windows 2008 R2, try applying the http://support.microsoft.com/KB/2908190 hotfix. If this still does not help, try applying the manual mitigation steps described in the article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791.
