How do I set up a FTP server on my VDS?(Windows only)

Post by kraze »

  1. Start by downloading the FileZilla Server
  2. Once it is installed open it up and you'll see something like this:

For general purposes you can leave these settings the way they are.
  3. Enter an administrator password, any will do
  4. Once you click ok you'll be presented with something like this:

For the most part your FTP server is now setup, now you just need to add users so they can access it.
  5. From the main window select "edit" then "users"
  6. On the right hand side select "add"

  7. Enter the username they will need to use during the login process
  8. Back at the main window select the "password" box and enter a password.
  9. Now on the left hand side select "Shared folders"

Depending on where your servers are located and how many users will be accessing FTP just giving access to the main "C:" drive should be fine(I don't recommend this for multiple users with multiple servers).
  10. Once you have added some folders be sure to give "read", "write" and "delete" access for that user
  11. Now select the "Speed Limits" tab
  12. For both upload and download check the box that says "No Limit"
Download and upload speeds are really slow!

If you notice that your transfer speeds are slower then normal try changing these settings to see if it helps.
  • From the main server window select "Edit" then "Settings"
  • Using the list on the left select "Miscellaneous"
  • You'll see two options which need to be changed:
Internal transfer buffer size and socket buffer size
  • To start off try doubling those numbers, if that does not help you can try tripling them.
Unfortunately there is no good generic settings for these, you'll need to play around and find whatever yields the best results.
