Why won't my mail (SMTP) server work?

Post by Edge100x »

If you just signed up for service here, you might notice that you can't connect to external hosts on port 25, which is used by mail servers for SMTP. We restrict external connections to this port for the first two weeks of service, and the first two weeks only, due to extremely high levels of abuse by individuals who purchase our servers looking to use them for spam.

No other ports are restricted, and this limitation is automatically removed after 14 days.

To get around this, you can initially use an external mail server to send your mail; specifically, you'll need to make use of an external server that is designed to be client-facing and therefore runs on a port other than 25 (generally, you will see them on 587). If you have a self-configured mail daemon on a different host that you would like to use for this, we can help you to configure your old server to support this second port -- just make a post in our forum and we will steer you in the right direction (it's very easy).

One mail server that runs on port 587 that you can use, if you have webhosting through us, is our mailserver at mail.nfoservers.com. When using this server, enable SMTP auth, specifying as your username and password one of the accounts you've created through your website control panel's "Mail" page.
