E3-1270 v5 machines now available for purchase in Chicago

Post by Edge100x » Wed Feb 17, 2016 5:29 pm

We have a limited number of E3-1270 v5 machines now available for purchase in Chicago! These are the latest and greatest from Intel and come with more RAM (64 GB) and a larger SSD (1 TB) than our other offerings here.

The hardware behind these is in pre-production, which means that it's been tested but isn't yet generally available. The next location that we will offer these is Frankfurt, which we hope to have ready by early the middle of next month.

Reason: Our hardware vendor told us that there will not be availability until the middle of next month at the earliest.

Is the SSD the only drive on the machine?

Yes, that's correct.

We've found that most customers only use one of the two drives and usually preferred the SSD unless more space was needed for specific installations. Bumping up its capacity was a natural choice.

We have replaced lots of spinning drives due to failures, but only one dedicated server has needed to have an SSD replaced so far. Needing to replace fewer drives should reduce customer downtime and our costs a bit in the long term.

I don't see many benchmarks for these. How do they compare to the E3-1271v3?

Our tests suggest that they are 5-10% faster clock-for-clock, which is about what we expect between Intel processor generations now (since the E3-1270 v1, at least). The amount of the difference will vary depending on the behavior of each application.

Did you sell out? Or, nor are you not offering this anymore?

We sold out!

Though, if the timeline with our vendor sticks we should be able to purchase more by the middle of this month.

Yes, once we're able to purchase a steady supply of them they will be offered at most locations, if not all locations.

How much were they and what is the monthly cost associated with them?

Thanks.

Will the https://www.nfoservers.com/order-dedicated-server.php page be updated the second they are back in stock? I plan to get one of these as soon as possible. It's a shame I missed the first batch.

Just for anyone reading this, they are back in stock (at least for now). We can order them more reliably than we could initially, because the manufacturer has ramped up production.
