Review of Caspian 64 players

Post by .=QUACK=.Major.Pain »

Hope you don't mind my opinion of some of the servers of some of the companies.

I tried out several company servers, and they appear all over the place performance wise. I tried to use Texas servers for all of them so I could compare.

I was mostly comparing the lag.

0/10 - MyIS - Screen was black and not able to play.
1/10 - Art of War - they had to be the worst for lag and stuttering.
3/10 - Gameservers - as I expected, laggy as per all the other servers I played of theirs.
8/10 - NFOServer - Performed very well, but had the occasional spike or freeze.
10/10 - MultiplyPlay - No lag found at all and ran really smooth.

Going to also try MyIS again and I think Brans next.

I think your on the right track. Just a little more tweaking.

1/10 - Art of War - they had to be the worst for lag and stuttering.
3/10 - Gameservers - as I expected, laggy as per all the other servers I played of theirs.
9/10 - Branzone - Seemed to run about the same as NFO servers
9/10 - NFOServer - Performed very well, but had the occasional spike or freeze.
10/10 - MultiplyPlay - No lag found at all and ran really smooth.

Tried another NFO server and it ran better than the Texas. Might have been a poor connection. Found Branzone ran about as good. MyIs only has 1 64 slot and still black screen.

Compared to the others, your setup seems to be on the top.

Would you happen to know what NFO server you played on in Texas? We were doing some performance/stress testing on a Texas server, which was being run on a 2 core VDS and it was lagging pretty bad.

It's not showing in my history anymore.

But I tried the LA and CHI and they ran pretty good.

I hope a 6 core VDS works ok.
I am sure they will get their act together before release with a lag free game play.

Most servers so far have not performed above 70% in my opinion.

Well the VDS we will testing on was the slowest in our fleet. So the VDS servers hosting BF3 will be on machines about 35% faster all around. There is a good chance VDS customers wont see to many problems, depending on the machine.

Dual Intel Xeon E5660 (Westermere-EP 2.8ghz) 6 cores.

:)

NFo runs top notch servers.

kraze, VDSes are put on various kinds of machines. Customers can sometimes request being put onto a faster machine, but we can't always do it (whether we can depends on availability). VDS customers running BF3 are on a level playing field compared to others who make such requests.

The VDS we were testing in Dallas was on a L5640-based (2.26ghz+turbo) box. It seems able to run up to 52 players or so before it suffers performance problems, but the exact number that will run smoothly at any given moment relates to the in-game conditions.

Pain, we're continuing to look into more tweaks. You'll likely see competitors drop their performance down further after the release as they load up boxes (instead of using dedicated, empty ones), but ours will remain high. The current plan is to put 64-slot servers only onto E3-1270 machines, and we aren't putting many servers onto each machine.

As part of the tweaking, I now have BF3 servers locked to CPU cores now. The lock is dynamically readjusted using a proprietary algorithm that I created a few years back, according to usage.

If anyone sees a difference from that, let me know.

Also, servers have been updated to the latest release (from late Friday evening). This should help their stability, as it has a few crash fixes.

Been with some of your competators and know all about the overloading and stress put on the game servers. Most that go to these companies are enticed by the cheapest prices, and that they themselves are so new to the gsp world, that they have no idea what they are about to get themselves into.

Looking forward to testing the servers again today.

Played on the CHI server for about an hour or so today, and everything was very smooth. At about 1:30pm est, everything seem to go downhill. Lots of lag and jumpy game play. Not sure if you were working on the server, updating server, etc., but it was very bad for quite a while and the server lost about 1/3 of the players shortly after this started.

Will try it again later tonight.

No maintenance going on here, and our Chicago test machine has had low CPU usage all day. The balancer is running properly and each server has its own dedicated physical core on that machine right now. It sounds like you may have been seeing a problem with the game itself, as I see servers occasionally use an entire CPU core for no apparent reason.

I'll check it out in more depth, though.

I've adjusted the balancer on the machine hosting #1 in Chicago a little further to allow the server to use either of the logical cores on a single physical core. Please let me know if you see any improvement from that.

John, I'm really glad you're good and knowledgeable in what you do for us. I don't know where we'd be without you. :)
