"Private" Server - Plugin alternative

Post by Sky »

Edge, this is mostly directed towards you and a post you made a while back regarding passwords on Left 4 Dead servers.
Edge... wrote:These games do not properly support setting a password. If you do set a password, the server will not respond to queries.

What are your thoughts on instead using a plugin which upon fully entering into the game requires a user to input the server password, and drops them from the server after x seconds or x attempts (or both) if they fail to enter it into chat. This would prevent the server from failing to respond to queries and also serve to meet the requirements for a private server. It would probably make it easier on a lot of users who don't enable the developer console, and search keys. Would such a plugin be acceptable under your terms for private servers?

I would think there is no reason why you couldn't use such a plugin.
This would allow queries, and provide you the appearance of being a private server.

Don't think Edge was saying you couldn't have a private server.
More that if you go private in the standard way, you would be disabling the query functions.

Your suggestion provides a great work around.

I think what he is getting at, is instead of forcing private server to have a password 24/7, have them use this plugin. That way the server can still appear up and be queried.

You should use sv_search_key instead: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =49&t=4146

sv_search_key doesn't work for private communities that want to keep their servers private, but still not allow lobby connections (like private, modded servers). It would allow anyone to connect (regardless of steamgroup) but still require them to enter a password, to stay. It prevents users from having to join every steamgroup of every private server they want to be a part of, because finding that server can often be tricky when dozens of groups post their servers in everyone's steam group.

That's why I was curious about it.
