3) OPTIONAL: To display a "banner image" to players that
download content, place a 340x56 pixel image in the
file <custom content directory>/gfx/banner.gif

I put a banner.gif in the gfx folder that meets the deminsions but it only shows up black on steam, does this happen to everyone else?

The banner doesn't work yet it will be fixed and working in an upcoming STEAM update

From the STEAM forums wrote:
The banner.gif part won't currently work, we need to release some new
binaries on the client side for that to start working. We expect to have
that release ready in a couple of weeks.

I say that steam should privatley test all of the new stuff they add, fix all the bugs, then release it to the public.. it would solve alot of trouble.

The Steam update that was scheduled to roll out today had mention of a fix to the HTTP fast downloading that would use the trickle down method if a file was missing from the HTTP server. Whether this works or not is another story and I am not sure if this update was applied to the HLDS update that was supposed to take place. It sounds a little sketchy because I am not sure how the server would be able to tell when a player got disconnected from the HTTP server for a bad file when the servers are separate from one another. You would think that the sv_downloadurl cvar would refer the client back to the HTTP server if it was found that a needed file was missing, creating a loop of connections so that the player would not be able to get the files even with trickle down.

Interesting.
