Arma 3, Dayz, horsepower needed?
We are anticipating the release of the DayZ Standalone and Arma 3 and we would like to get prepared to run several of these in combination. I'd like some help in estimate what we would need in a VDS to run the following:
I have noticed how nicely Laughingman's NFO servers are running dayz. Easily the smoothest running servers out there.
One Arma 3 server & two DayZ servers.
We currently have a four VDS for our community running older games and it handles four CoD2 servers nicely.
Would another four core cover this?

What size servers are you looking at running? When I tested DayZ earlier in the year I would recommend nothing but a three core for a single 50 slot server since it would use about two HT cores and then the OS running on the third.
Running two DayZ and an Arma 3 server could push the four core a bit, especially if you are running more servers on top of that.
If you don't mind can you list all the servers you plan on running with the slot counts, we should be able to recommend something for you. However, as it stands now I would imagine you may need to go to a six core.

Thanks and sure I can.
Arma 3 - 50 slots
DayZ Standalone 60 slots x 2.
Ideally you'd want 2 cores per server and 1 for the databases?

Re: Arma 3, Dayz, horsepower needed?
Assuming those servers are full(which is normally where you want to aim) You'll most likely need a six core. Since I would expect both DayZ servers use to about two HT cores and then Arma 3 I have yet to evaluate but I expect it to be similar.
The database most likely wont be a CPU issue but if it's doing heavy reads/writes to the disk you can see some issues, so adding a little bit of SSD space would solve that.
However, I would encourage you to stick with the four core and setup a few servers to see how they perform. Ultimately you'll want to aim for the 40-50% CPU range to maintain optimal performance.

Re: Arma 3, Dayz, horsepower needed?
Current dayz servers run with these parameters: -cpuCount=2 -exThreads=1 -maxMem=2048
Current Arma 3 Alpha only has: maxmem=2047
Ours right now is empty and hovering at 91,836kb
Our Wasteland Stratis is right now 25/25 players and using 15% CPU and 615,334kb
I would expect standalone to also use the same as current dayz servers.
Hope that gives you a little more to work with.
Probably best to assume 2 cores per server.

Would you need an additional core for the dayz database if its a private hive? Would one extra core be able to handle more than one database?.=QUACK=.Major.Pain wrote:Current dayz servers run with these parameters: -cpuCount=2 -exThreads=1 -maxMem=2048

Re: Arma 3, Dayz, horsepower needed?
I found that hosting the dayz database on the same servers really decreased the performance and caused lag. I have a VPS account with a webhosting service, and I run all my databases there separate from the game servers. Doing so cleared up all the lag we experienced.

Re: Arma 3, Dayz, horsepower needed?
How were you able to remotely host the database? I had asked about this when private hive dayz servers first became a reality but think I got some feedback saying the database needed to be on the same server as as the game. I would assume having a remotely hosted database would effect the servers performance with all that data having to be sent to a different location. No?.=QUACK=.Major.Pain wrote:I found that hosting the dayz database on the same servers really decreased the performance and caused lag. So it would be possible just to add basic webhosting with a VPS package and host it there I would think.

What Server OS would you choose? Windows Server 2003 x64, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012?

We run Windows Server 2008 R2 on both our dedicated servers.
