What FPS rates can I run game servers at on a dedi?

Post by Edge100x »

The maximum FPS rate for game servers is limited by the OS.

For HL1-based, Source, and Orangebox games -- which covers most games made by Valve -- the limits are:

Windows 2003 - A stable 500fps
Windows 2008 - A more fluctuating 1000fps
Linux - Varies from kernel to kernel and requires special configuration, but with our Gentoo install, >950fps

To achieve these, you'll need to, on Windows:

- Run "srcdsfpsboost.exe" or a similar application
- Have a high (0 or 2000+) sys_ticrate (HL1) or fps_max (Source/Orangebox) value in your server.cfg
- Have HPET enabled in the BIOS, if you're using Windows 2008 (we enable this by default on all machines we ship)

On Linux, you should:

- Use a kernel that supports hrtimers, has dyntick disabled, and has power management set to the lowest levels. Our default Gentoo kernel is set up properly, and the CentOS kernel should work as well.
- Run the server at "realtime" priority as described in http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =47&t=4078
- Have a high (0 or 2000+) sys_ticrate (HL1) or high fps_max (Source/Orangebox) value in your server.cfg

Our order page for normal game servers shows that we support 2000+ FPS for Source-based games, and we have exclusive, proprietary FPS stabilization technology that makes our Linux-based gameservers run at solid FPS rates. These systems are not currently available to dedicated or VPS servers. The highest that dedicated servers and VPS servers can run at is 1000fps.
