VDS Sales and transfer question

Post by Captain Slapdash »

Hi,

I'm interested in renting a VDS (probably 1-3 basic option) for running a HL2:DM server and starting up a Freelancer server.

At present I run the HL2:DM through Gameservers along with a website for Psychostats and redirect server for quick download. I also previously ran a Freelancer server but the local box connection just wasn't really good enough.

Basically if I start renting a Virtual Dedicated Server do you have advice on making the switch from Gamerservers as pain free as possible?

I'll look to try the free trial and see if I can make headway as well.

Running servers on a VDS or dedicated server is always a bit more work than running a normal shared, managed server, but if you have run servers on your own before, and you follow our basic setup guides, you should make relatively quick work of it.

On your file redirect, you could either run a webserver on the VDS, alongside your game servers, or you could get a separate webhosting package with us, and put the files on that. The main benefits to using the VDS would be that it wouldn't cost anything extra and that you'd be able to update the webserver a little more quickly if your maps change; the benefits to using our normal webhosting are that you wouldn't have to worry about the bandwidth limit (though it's tough to use all the bandwidth on a VDS anyhow), and that you wouldn't need to set up and secure the website.

On helping your player base to adjust by finding the new server, I'd recommend either using a plugin to advertise the new IP in the old server constantly, combined with a small player maximum such as 1 or 2, or forcing all players into the new server by using the MOTD trick (the steam:// URL redirect).

Thanks Edge,

I'm underway with a basic VPS setup and have got HL2DM with all the custom Source and Metamod bits and pieces installed. Nice and easy with your 'How to' guides so thank you for those.

Next task will be Freelancer and related. I think I can just copy an fresh install on to the VPS through RD but if not cad you run a CD install from your local box to the VPS?

All the best

I'm not familiar with Freelancer, but it is most likely the case that you can zip up the game folder on your personal machine and upload that to your server to install it there, as you suggested, as that is the case with most games. If that doesn't work, I'd recommend making an .iso of the disk and uploading that to the VDS, then using software like Daemon Tools to turn it into an emulated drive, installing from that.

Thanks again.... and well done deciphering the question through all the horrendous typos. Must read my messages back before I post
