Installing custom maps/addons is actually super-easy -- it should just be a matter of uploading the relevant .vpk file to the "addons" folder on the server. L4D does not support fast downloads and everything's in that one file, so it's a one-step process.

On the maplist, that really isn't needed unless you need to add it to a voting list or some such.

As for double clicking the files, you are correct that you need to upload them through the FTP. You don't need to double-click them for that, just drag and drop them on as is.

The install message just means that they installed on your game client, which is a special feature/function of Steam.

As John explained above, they get uploaded to the addons folder instead. After that, you need to restart the server, and the server will automatically register the files for you.

The .vpk files are uploaded to addons folder and that's all you need.
No install needed, but a server restart may be needed.

The .bsp and .nav files rarely are found from l4dmaps, but there are a few.
These then would be put in the maps folder, but they also come with a .vpk file which goes to the addons folder. Most people package their map packs file the file/folder structure in tact, so you can easily see where to upload them.

As for the advert.txt, if this is for advertising, l4d2 uses host.txt and motd.txt.
You can use these from your own clan banners of nfo banners.

I am running 5 l4d2 servers right now with no plugins.
Just using custom maps. We hit 250-480 visitors total each day.

Thats awesome.

I find alot of people like playing l4d2.
The advert txt is the scrolling txt in game, like counter strike source, does left 4 dead support that.

Also uploading the vpk files to the addons folder as is,how do i configure which map it starts on..i know thru control panel there is an easy setup panel.

You don't set the map other than the default maps.

It can be done, but you need a program to extract to .vpk map pack to get the actual map names.

We just use "Play with Friends" and create a campaign selecting the addon map we want to play, and then for server type, we select steam group so that we can select any of our servers. The server will then change the map and connect you to the server.

That's only if the server is currently empty, and you setup your steam group id in the server.cfg file.

Not sure about the advert, but I think there is a plugin called advert.

Any vpk mods would go to the addons folder, yes.

You can set the server to start on that map, yes. The most simple way to find a full list of map names is to first have them installed and working on the server, then use this command:

rcon maps *

The * is a wildcard to show all maps without filtering the results.

I also see 3 folders in my ftp called lfd2 lfd2dlc lfd2dlc2 lfd2dlc3
The DLC folder just contain data for extra content that was later released and should be left alone. All configs, addons, and so forth that you need to worry about will be in the l4d2 folder.
