Like Windows 8, Windows 2012 changes the UI a bit from previous versions of Windows. The easiest way to get to a Start screen is to hit the Windows key on your keyboard; you can also dig around in the left corner of the desktop and click "Start" (when it appears), though that's a bit trickier.
From that Start screen, you can immediately start typing in a search query, as you could with the old menu.
Another very handy keyboard shortcut is Windows key + x. This will bring up a menu with the most commonly-used Windows tools, including Task Manager, Command Prompt, Events Log, and Programs and Features.
Where's my start button in Windows 2012? How do I do anything?
