Instead of breaking out the extra cost associated with managed servers as a separate option, we currently subsidize it and keep the base price the same. We do this partially because we want to keep things simple and allow customers to switch back and forth at will.
Managed servers cost us more to run because we must spend time to maintain the OS and utilities, perform game updates, and help the customer to support each game server on the VDS. In addition, each created game server receives its own IP address, whose cost we absorb.
We also wish to set a minimum performance bar to make sure that customers have enough memory and CPU to run common games.
The minimum core requirement increases over time as we lower our package prices (the managed server costs to us are more static, so they don't go down at the same time), and because CPU and memory requirements for games are going up.
Why do managed servers have a minimum core requirement?
