Is there any way to get a better CPU on a VPS?
I've received enough donations for my server for me to consider upgrading. However the only viable upgrade I can think of is a faster CPU. I've got enough RAM and enough storage space, the CPU would be the bottleneck at this point. I have the dual-core plan but we all know Minecraft is mostly single core and is only capable of using the second core for memory management and certain plugins. My server barely uses the second core as it is, even when it's lagging and the first core is running at 100%, so I doubt buying more cores would help.
There's no option for faster CPU on the website, so if there really is no option, I would like to suggest that as an upgrade for you guys to add.

Our VDS machines already use some of the fastest machines available, so we don't really have much room for an option like that. Other companies could certainly use it, though (most places use far slower ones).

Which CPU are you on? There is a high chance you are on the fastest CPU available from Intel already...

Really? I didn't know that. Must be a software issue on my end then.
I'm on the Seattle center, so I have whatever they have.

You can check pretty easily on linux using:LEOcab wrote:Really? I didn't know that. Must be a software issue on my end then.

Code: Select all
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep Xeon

Modded minecraft is a pig, no matter how you configure it. I have a FTB server that currently idles at 110% CPU(with everyones base chunk loaded). This is on a bare metal machine.

Code: Select all
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 0 @ 2.90GHz

Yeah you can't get much faster than that.LEOcab wrote:Is that the one you're talking about, the fastest one?Code: Select all

I'm in a similar situation running a TF2 server on a single-core Linux only instance. When my server hits its max of 32 players the CPU maxes out, server framerate drops to about half, and ping times for all clients increase about 20-30ms. However I don't have an E5 core, instead I have a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5675 @ 3.07GHz.
I could certainly benefit from an E5's kind of headroom, how would I be able to get it?

By upgrading to a 2-core VDS.
The single core linux-only VDS's are very cheap for the dedicated resources you get. Because of this, they are usually placed on last-gens fastest hardware. If you want the best hardware, you would need to upgrade so it makes financial sense for NFO.
With that said, the x5675 should be able to handle a 32 slot TF2 server on a valve map just fine. Do you have anything else running on the single core VDS? A website? SQL server? Even TS3 could effect performance on a single core VDS with a full TF2 server.

You don't have to go to a 2 core. Only the Linux-Only VDSs aren't able to be moved, so by upgrading just to the regular one core, you could be moved.soja wrote:By upgrading to a 2-core VDS.

Everything else was correct, though, unless perhaps you're running MvM. I'm not as familiar with the usage of MvM servers, but a bunch of bots would definitely increase usages. It doesn't appear that is your case, though.
Re: Is there any way to get a better CPU on a VPS?
I have a basic webserver and MySQL running, but neither of them appear to be making any appreciable use of CPU. At 24 players the server seemed to be holding up fine but at around 85% of a core (measured in top). I recall from previously running this server in a very similar configuration on an E3-1230v2 (dedicated box) the server taking up approximately 55-60% of a core when full at 32 players.
If I'm reading this correctly, my current server could not be directly migrated to a higher plan? Would that also mean I would lose the IP address I have?

With the combination of Xen overhead and the lower power CPU, this usage makes sense. What type of server are you running? Can you supply the IP?skrshawk wrote:I have a basic webserver and MySQL running, but neither of them appear to be making any appreciable use of CPU. The single-core linux only option cannot be moved to a higher power CPU because of the bargain you get already for $10. You would need to upgrade to the normal single core option, then you can ask in a ticket if there are any faster CPUs available in your location. You will not lose your IP or any data when upgrading your VDS, as long as it stays in the same location you are currently in(for example, if your VDS is in Chicago, it must stay in Chicago for you to keep your IP).
I would open a ticket, ask if there are any faster CPUs available, then let them know you are upgrading, and then reply back saying you have finished the upgrade. This will remove the chance that there is no faster CPU available after you complete the upgrade.

Server is running CentOS 6, IP is 192.223.31.230. Only things beyond the core system running are Apache, MySQL, HLStats, and the TF2 server itself. I started this process by opening a ticket (#854562) but was told there were no guarantees as to what kind of CPU I would get if I upgraded, but was advised to post here. I'm not opposed to paying for an upgrade if it means an actual upgrade for what I need and a smooth migration.
