Hey there, forums! I'm new to not only nfoservers, but to the dedicated server thing altogether. I'm hoping to break a learning curve through this community, as I heard it was a really great place to start out, due to all the helpful people here.
So, less than an hour after receiving my connection info and getting the server set up, I've ran into my first impasse.
To start off, here's my server specifications:
Description: Intel Xeon E3-1270 (Sandy Bridge 3.4ghz)
Number of CPUs: 1, with 4 total cores
Speed of CPUs: 3.40 ghz
Type of CPUs: Intel Xeon QC
Amount of RAM: 32 GB
Standard hard drive size: 0 GB
SSD hard drive size: 160 GB
OS: CentOS
Hopefully I made a good choice in ordering. I went with something that a friend recommended. I'm looking to run a few minecraft bukkit servers off this machine, in hopes of setting up a hub system later on. For now, though, I'm just wanting to get a single server online.
Alright, now to my current problem.
I received my connection info via email. My ip address, username "root", and the password. I opened up putty and entered the ip in the top, leaving the port as 22, and clicked open. This opened up the window prompt and I connected to the server. So far, so good. Then, login as username "root", press enter. It prompts me for a password. So, I enter the password given to me in the email, but it denies access. I've tried entering it manually, and copy/pasting it. Neither seems to work.
If anybody knows what I may be missing here, and could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it!
First time setting up a dedi. Could use some assistance.

Running a dedicated server is very similar to running a VPS, you just have to be more weary of ensuring that you don't accidentally lose access by things such as firewall rules, something going wrong at boot, etc. Most problems can be avoided by being careful on what you do.
On topic to your problem, if you're using the given password and it isn't working, I'd make a ticket in the 'Help!' section of the control panel so that staff can look into it as it does appear you're doing everything right.
