Odd Rubberbanding.

Post by The Sad Zealot »

I recently moved into a new apartment (with Comcast) and am having strange issues with multiplayer gaming. In particular, when playing CS:GO (or CSS!), I get random rubberbanding incidents every 5 to 10 seconds, and the choke goes from 0% to 1% very briefly. This happens on Valve servers as well as community servers (one in particular that I admin). It's also not a graphical error- I can play offline with bots, and single player games work fine.

My speeds are 53/6.

It really makes no sense- I had a technician come out and look at the modem, router (whatever it is) and he said it was fine. I'm all out of ideas. Tracerts and wimMTR shows no issues, as well. Really am stumped.

Thanks in advance for the help.

make sure your "rate" is maxed out.

Type:
rate 128000
in your console after joining a server.

Valve servers have terrible performance, expect sub-optimal performance on any valve server. As for a server hosted here, they should be operating at peak at all times.

The configs on a NFO server should be automatically set well if it is managed or a standalone game server.

If the above command on your client doesn't work, put this in your server.cfg
sv_max_allowed_net_graph 4

This will allow you to use net_graph 4 on the server, making it easier to look for lag issues.

I should have been more clear- I have taken all the normal steps applicable when having an issue of this sort. My rates (rate, cmd, update) are all set appropriately. I was talking with support, and they weren't sure what to think by this point. I've run tracerts, MTR's, etc, and they all come up clean.

The only hint I know of is that at the moment the rubber band "snaps," the choke goes to 1% for a very brief period.

Any other ideas? I'm having issues in several multiplayer games, but I figure that it's probably all the same problem in the end.

I used to have FIOS but then I moved, so far Comcast is not impressing.

When the Comcast tech says "everything is fine", it's not

- Comcast customer locked into a three year contract..

On a serious note. Since this issue is happening on all servers it helps us narrow down where to look. This would indicate an issue with your game or something on your network or local infrastructure.

In your case, the first thing I'd test would be to plug directly into the modem(router works as well). You'll want to rule out anything which may be to blame here, so it's a good idea to also disable any firewalls and anti-viruses which could be blocking or restricting connections.

I'd also try running an extended MTR or a PingPlotter. I'm generally a bigger fan of PingPlotters for extended test as it's very easy to read the data and find similar data points.

ok, so MTR might be useless? I ran PingPlotter and actually got some results. I should note, however, A) that I also changed out Ethernet cords, and B) it seemed even worse than it was before. I put the old cord back in, still 2% and feels worse. Just for note.

Here is the pingplotter:

Edit: Sorry that I can't make it look nicer, I can't get the picture version to upload. Extension not allowed!

You can upload the picture to a site like Imgur and just post a link if you'd like. It'd be get to test some more neutral IPs since it appears this issue is happening everywhere. Try running PingPlotter to GoogleDNS and see what your results look like.
