Very high CPU

Post by doulos9 »

I have a 4-core VDS running 1 40-man CS:S running custom maps and several plugins, a 28-man CS:S running default maps, and 1 32-man CS:S Zombie escape server.

The classic map server and the zombie server are not advertised and are almost always empty.
Stats (according the the sever usage) for these two servers are: classic map server - 8 players/normalized CPU 8%; zombie - 8 players/5% CPU

The main 40-man server runs roughly 60-65% when full. However, tonight (with nothing changed and normal daily map rotation) we saw a spike of 380% CPU (with less than 30 players) which totally shut down our server for 15 mins, attempts to get on the control panel were very slow or timed out. Pins to the other 2 servers which were empty at the time went up to 2-3 times normal. Eventually, the main server came back on line and pings normalized for all servers.

The only thing noted in the events log was that the main server was found to be down for between 5 and 10 minutes. I assumed that we were getting a ddos attack but apparently nothing out of the ordinary apparently happened that NFO felt needed to be posted in the events log.

I've been running CS:S servers for 10 years and I have never experienced anything like this that was not connected to an attack on our server.

What could cause such a problem when the maps/plugins/configs, etc have not changed?

With nothing changed on this server it ran at (normalized CPU usage) 74% with 38 players last night. Same config, same plugins, same maps. Not as good as 60-65% but a lot better than 380%.

It's hard to say what happened here. Were any changes made to the VDS itself? Such as did you install a new server to it..etc?
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point
@Juski> Got my new signature, thanks!
@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

Nope nothing has changed for weeks except that I removed one plugin about three weeks ago which dropped the CPU average from 85% when full to about 65%.

I will be removing one SM plugin at a time to see if I can isolate a plugin that might be causing it.

I don't know how it happened, but I found 2 copies of superlogs running (different names). After removing one we were at 60% CPU with 35 players. It ran very smooth.
