We use a specific slightly older version because it was more compatible with addons and didn't have an ugly bug that the new version has. They're both compatible with clients.
Our position to Valve has been that they should make the latest version required for that game, for simplicity. That would help them to ferret out the bugs, since not many people run the newer versions when they are optional. But, they have declined to do this.

I can't immediately remember and I'd have to dig around. I think it may have had something to do with player movement.
