Windows 2016

Post by mgm »

I know it has only been released a few weeks ago but I am keen to purchase a Windows 2016 VM. Do you have any plans, or better still, an ETA for making Windows 0216 VMs available?

Thanks.

This is something that we will support on virtual servers at some later date, but I don't have a firm ETA.

The new licensing for Windows 2016 makes it far more expensive for us to host on VDSes than Windows 2012 R2. 2016 costs us the same as 2012 R2 for dedicated machines.

Microsoft is actually starting to push that with Windows 10, and I assume Server 2016.

If you are running 8 cores or less on a physical server, Windows Server Datacenter 2016 SPLA pricing is exactly the same as Windows Server 2012. How many physical cores on the servers hosting your VDSes?

mgm: More than that, for all machines that run Windows. We haven't bought VDS machines with 8 cores per processor for some years now.

We currently allow it on dedicated servers. No current ETA for VDSes.

We have not done testing with it ourselves, but the OS isn't usually a bottleneck for game servers, since they tend to be CPU and memory bound. There are a few exceptions when the developer makes certain design decisions, such as CS:GO not threading properly on Linux, and (previously) Valve games not using high resolution counters on Windows, but for the most part, we don't see the OS getting in the way of recent games.
