Not sure if that was really the cause as I have gone to quite a few well populated servers to see how stable they were running, and people were connecting/disconnecting all the time, none of them crashing from that.
I have played on my own server with bots enabled, with minimal chatter from them and no crashes.
I am thinking that this is more of a combination of exploits being used + bugs in the OB/updates being released than any one single source.

The annoying part about troubleshooting is that there is often more than one cause working together to cause a problem. Throw in a large number of variables, and you are in for some work.
In this case, I do think that note in the updates was directly related to the problem. While I didn't have time to confirm before leaving for my weekend, it did seem to be Windows servers specifically that were having this issue. Either way, hopefully this is the last we see of it.
