John has a custom kernel already with every CentOS and Gentoo VDS here at NFO. I find that linux out performs Windows overall for server based situations. I do have a computer at home running Windows Home Server, and it's pretty neat.mattb wrote:Yeah curious because I go on the steam/srcds forums and they talk highly about linux ubuntu, gentoo. It is still generally accurate. Do you have a specific question about it?
well thanks guys for comments.

I've done far more research than anyone you'll meet on those forumsmattb wrote:Yeah curious because I go on the steam/srcds forums and they talk highly about linux ubuntu, gentoo. Linux is well-liked, and it does have a lot going for it. For instance:
* It's free!
* Linux works well for high-performance webservers.
* It's easy to script for Linux. Automating is a breeze, since it's so command-line oriented.
* Linux can be customized, rewritten, and tweaked as needed, if you have the smarts. Want a special kernel feature? Compile it in! Want to test a different configuration that might improve performance? You can!
* There's a geek pride factor, because Linux is more unusual and takes extra effort to initially learn. Who doesn't want to seem smarter and more out-of-the-box by saying they like something that's tough?
Those are all great reasons to love Linux, and I do. We started on Linux, and run a bunch of customized Linux machines now on our network.
But, the sad truth is that Valve's servers for HL1, Source, and Orangebox game engines still use fewer resources on Windows, with less overhead. Why? We're not quite sure, but it probably has something to do with the fact that these games were coded, tested, and optimized primarily on Windows -- and they have to be, since that's the platform of clients. Every other OS that these games support is a port.
The difference is not very large nowadays, especially with the latest Orangebox releases, so you shouldn't worry about it unless you're running a ton of servers, or you need to squeeze out every last drop of performance. A single small server will perform about the same on Linux and Windows.
A further note: Our ultraaccelerated servers run on Linux here, exclusively. I wrote some custom kernel code that makes it possible for the framerate to be particularly stable on these. That's not something that I could have done on Windows.

The modified kernel isn't available as a separate product, but you can take advantage of it on our managed Linux VDSes and dedicated machines.John, how much for that special kernel?

So you aren't gonna hand it out to anyone for cash? I'd love to snag it from ya, but I'm worried to ask what you would ask price wise. That's if you would even consider giving it out.Edge100x wrote:The modified kernel isn't available as a separate product, but you can take advantage of it on our managed Linux VDSes and dedicated machines.John, how much for that special kernel?

Most likely we will not, no.rustydusty1717 wrote:So you aren't gonna hand it out to anyone for cash? I'd love to snag it from ya, but I'm worried to ask what you would ask price wise. That's if you would even consider giving it out.
