Starbound support

Post by soja »

This game kind of seems like an overnight best seller, I have never heard of it until today.

Starbound!
Site: http://playstarbound.com/
Community Forums: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php
Server section of their forums: http://community.playstarbound.com/inde ... dding.102/

I was asked to put a server up for people in my community to play on, and to my surprise, this game has a TON of players right now:

This is at midnight on the east coast.

I have the server running on a linux server atm, it is a terraria looking game, the memory on the 64-bit linux server is about 250MB atm, but I can't really provide much more info than that right now.

The game is in beta, so I understand if you guys want to wait to provide this as a managed install until it is out of beta. Just thought I would bring this (seemingly large) game to your attention!

EDIT: I can see why it is in beta! The server is using around 30% of an i3-2130 ( http://ark.intel.com/products/53428/ ) with 2 players.

The worlds are randomly generated server-side, and I had a friend enter a new world and it used an entire CPU core(and then some). They seem to have a lot of good feedback going on in the server discussion section of their forums, so hopefully they get it ironed out!

Update: They have really leveled out the resource requirements for this game. I have the server files if NFO wants to do resource testing.

We've done a fair amount of testing with Starbound. The last time we checked it didn't support IP binding :/
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point
@Juski> Got my new signature, thanks!
@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

I've had some bad luck with it in a private (passworded) server I set up for a few friends (max 4~ people). Seems it has a memory leak still, maxing out my dedi's ram (3gb) is not good, especially as it seemed to have happened when there wasn't even anyone on the server (sigh).

We run a server and not seeing any memory leaks.
But we by default, restart our servers once a day.

Could be it - I don't restart it often.

This server uses way too much cpu with more players maxing out a core at over 150% at times on linux plus overtime it ends up using 50% or more of ram is it not optimized very well yet for servers.
