BitCoin & LiteCoin mining

Hi guys,

I run a virtual server for an online game here, but it only uses 25% of the CPU max. So I was wondering is there any legal or moral reason why I cannot also use my server to do coin mining?

Not to my knowledge, no.

However for performance reasons it would be better to resist. Mining isn't very effective anymore, and it is good to have some overhead for your servers to spike. Perhaps downgrade your package with NFO instead.

Yes, you would be better off downgrading your package. CPU-based mining is not cost-effective (or anywhere close). GPU-based mining isn't even cost-effective now.

I'm already running the minimal package, which is the advantage of hosting a game that's now over 10 year old! But as you say it's not worth the risk, of both killing the server's CPU or even going over the Internet allowed usage limit.

Neither of which would happen. Xeon CPUs are designed to handle very intense workloads, at 24/7 operation. Mining uses minimal bandwidth, as far as I could tell with my short usage of folding@home, it downloads the unit to be processed, and uploads it when finished. This results in less than a GB used per month depending on the size of the unit.

I've tried mining using CPU here and it's really not worth even doing, the difficulty on most crypto currency is just too high for CPU-based mining anymore.
