Applications close or reboot when disconnecting from RDP

Post by kraze »

To prevent Windows from closing or terminating applications upon disconnecting from Remote Desktop, you'll need to edit the time limit for disconnected sessions from within Group Policy.
  1. Click on the "start" button and type "gpedit.msc", then click enter.
  2. Using the left-hand pane and navigate to "Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits".
  3. Double click on "Set time limit for disconnected sessions" and select "Enable".
  4. Under "Options" select "Never" from the drop-down box.
  5. Click "Apply" then "OK"
This change does not require a reboot of the VDS, but will require all users disconnect and reconnect to establish the changes.

Additionally, we recommend running important applications (such as game servers) as services, so that they are always online and start automatically when the machine is booted. You can do this with software such as Firedaemon.
