What is "Rust (with all optional updates)" on the order page?

Post by kraze »

Normally, when game developer releases an update, it is a mandatory update. This means that all server owners must update their servers or risk players with updated clients being unable to connect. More recently, and especially with the advent of Early Access games, game developers have stopped following a release schedule and have instead been pushing out multiple patches a week (sometimes per day) -- with not all of those releases actually being mandatory. Generally, these optional updates include new features that are being tested, and often they include extra bugs that are associated with those new features.

With Rust, some customers were requesting that we always update to the latest version, while others wanted to remain on a more stable track (that required fewer server wipes). To handle this, we created a second version of the game on our order page.

You can switch your server to or from the version allowing optional updates by doing a change order. Please note that making this change will reset your server back to a stock configuration, as if it were a brand new order. There aren't usually significant compatibility issues between the two branches any more, though, so if you'd like to keep your customizations, you may be able to make your own world backup beforehand and re-upload it to your server after the change is made.
