Game hosting issues

Post by emeraldmoonx »

I've purchased the 2 core VDS and I'm using to host a pretty much unknown gaming website called BYOND. It allows people to create then host their games for people to play. I'm hosting a game that's been created. Simply put the software is really old, uses 32-bit and to my knowledge seems to only use 1 core while hosting and 1-2 threads.

So my issue is that the game is also pretty unoptimized, while in the game itself [client version of the hosted game], I experience some lag. When hosting only about 20-30% of my 1st cpu core is being used, and the 2nd core has no usage. Ram wise the game uses about 600MB to maintain and I have 2gb.

So i'm kind of confused as to why it causes issues [and no I can't ask on the forums for that site cause I'd never ever get a response]. To clarify, when I host locally on my pc, I get 0-1% cpu usage [according to the game], and there's no lag at all...

The VDS is duo-core at 3ghz, while my cpu is octocore at 3.5 ghz... Now considering the game only makes use of 1 cpu, I doubt a .5 ghz increase would make such a large difference.

Anyways... Sorry if you read all that, I'm wondering what I should do, do I need to upgrade somewhere? If more details are needed, please ask.

If both servers are empty, and the one here uses much more CPU, there is very likely a configuration problem with the software at play. But, it's difficult to guess what it might be, since we are not familiar with that software internally. It would be best to ask other operators who use it.

You might also try different OS versions, or running it in different compatibility modes.
