Hi,
My first experience hosting a game server was off my PC about a month ago. Leaning off the support of the modding community I hosted a minecraft server from my computer. This is no great feat.
I switched to a VPS provided by a new company dedicated to minecraft servers. They were kinda managed, but had a control pannel. Anyways the service was crap and I just wanted more direct control.
How steep is the learning curve for a newb to unmanaged VPS?
How similiar is a Windows 2003 OS to my current windows version (7) or any of the last five I grew up with?
Basically is it realistic for someone with next to no programming knowledge to purchase an unmanaged VPS?
Thanks for the help.
Is an umanaged VPS right for me?

The learning curve is very low, if you've already run servers locally -- through Remote Desktop, it's just like using your machine at home.KlondikeMIC wrote:How steep is the learning curve for a newb to unmanaged VPS?
Windows 2003 is essentially Windows XP + some added server-related features. Using it would will be just like using XP for you.How similiar is a Windows 2003 OS to my current windows version (7) or any of the last five I grew up with?

Did you mean absolutley? Cause then I'm sold heheh.

Whoops! Yes, I meant absolutely. For some reason, I read you as saying "...is it unrealistic...".
Running an unmanaged VDS does not require programming skills.
We also have a 2-day free trial, and if you accidentally delete an important file, or just want a different OS, you can install new hard drive contents at any time through the control panel here. There's very little risk

I'm running a Minecraft server off and on on my unmanaged VDS right now (Well, not this very second, but periodically). I'd be happy to help get you set up if you need it. I'd also suggest you look into something like McAdmin (http://www.mcadmin.eu) or McMyAdmin (I like this better; http://www.phonicuk.com/Software/McMyAdmin.aspx) to manage your server.

Not really needed, NFo provides several easy to follow guides regarding server setup and SRCDS.exe stuff.

We don't have a guide specifically for Minecraft right now, but we'd all be willing to help .
If someone has some spare time on their hands to make a tutorial for the KB, it'd be much appreciated!
