PC Desk Build

Post by Nobody »

I got the idea from a modder in the UK years ago when I saw his build log. If you have ever seen the L3p desk, then you know exactly what I'm doing.

Here is the sample I made, it's a little old and I will be making changes.
Image

The desk will consist of two compartments, one in the back housing two 480 radiators, with two 120mm exhaust fans most likely on either side of the desk. My power supply, pumps and all my cables will be in this area.

The main compartment will house all of the main components such as my motherboard, hard drives, etc… For positive pressure I am thinking of having 3 intake fans (with filters) along with 1-2 exhaust fans on the opposite side. Since I already have the desk cut out, I will be cutting out fan holes after I bend it.

Hopefully later today I will be able to bend it and then have it welded maybe tomorrow. After it has been welded, I will cut out a long piece of aluminum to separate the two compartments all together. I also need to cut out and weld the leg box into the desk, but I will do that later.

Material:
.125 5052 Aluminum

Dimensions:

Desk:
66 x 26 x 8

Main compartment:
66 x 18 x 8

Second compartment:
66 x 8 x 8

Leg box:
30 x 18 x 4

For sure, I just bent the table earlier today so I will take some pictures tomorrow when it's welded. After that it's time for the flange that will seal off the two compartments, welding in the leg box and cutting out holes for the fans.

Still unsure if I'm going to use glass or plexi. This might be mounted on my wall and if it is running cables will from the back compartment will be difficult. If I use plexi it will be much easier to cut a hole for mouse, keyboard and monitor cables.

If you guys have any suggestions about this desk, please post them.

Looks like a neat workstation! Did one years ago, just don't have time to do that anymore. Over the past 3 years I've gathered pictures of my clients setups. Some we have put in new blade arrays, san arrays or just simply moved their entire infrastructure to a virtualized enviroment. Currently our main project is a county doing a complete VDI setup. All applications are thinapp'd and used to run on virtualized desktops for all end users. Anyways, along the way I've gathered tons of pictures. Some old, some new and vary from just servers, to large scale NAS, SAN and blade arrays. These are plenty of hours involved in each rack. Sometimes too many hours...however I still love my job.

Are you running like a mini Internap out of your room?

I see like three desktops, four routers and some dead things in a jar?

lol :D

For connection, I have a Business cable connection at 50Mb down, 5Mb up. A VDSL2 Business at 25Mb down, 5Mb up and a back up ADSL 6x1. The hardware has changed since that picture, but I have one physical router, 2 virtual machines running pfsence for other connections, HP Procurve 2610 for my switch(used) and two AP's to cover the entire house. Unfortunately for me, the house is 2600sqft per floor. I'd love to get a nice enterprise class AP's that could easily cover the house, but those come in at a 5k pop on lower end scale. Love to also get a dual wan router than can handle fail over, but those ain't cheap. Luckily some of my clients have this equipment currently and are possibly looking at getting even newer stuff. Now to persuade them to just give me the old, but still extremely valuable equipment.

Also, none of them are "desktops" anymore. Most are running some higher end consumer hardware, but the software is either ESXi or Hyper-V core. Main machine is just an Intel Q920, 16GB ddr3, 6 solid states and a nice raid controller. I posted the specs to the other one I just finished that will be in the cabinet soon. Still deciding if I should put a door on the cabinet with some fans.

Aluminum Tubing: done (besides the plugs on each corner)

Inner leg box and the baffle/flange hopefully will get bent and welded by tomorrow tomorrow, hopefully.

Looking good!

Have you actually decided what kind of hardware you are going to put in it yet?
