Counter Strike GO

I am having troubles running a CSGO server from my unmanaged VDS. I was able to install it and setup scripts to start and stop and such. I see the server in the master list but when I connect to it the game just hangs at connecting or kicks me back to a lobby. All research points to bad configs and to be honest I don't quite understand this wacky system Valve setup for this game. Does anyone run these successfully and if so can you post good working configs that I can see to mirror setup. I tried editing the example but it's a mess and I don't know what it all means. I am attempting a Deathmatch server to start with but would like to toy with the other gametypes once I know how to make it work...

Any help would be appreciated! I know Edge will have some input.

It sounds like you have a configuration issue with your gamemodes_server.txt file. CSGO is extremely picky on how that is setup and something as simple as a extra bracket will cause this.

You may try taking a look at this guide here which explains how to setup a custom mapgroup.

Please help me to understand what is not right. The server restarts but I cannot connect to it and the logs aren't really showing any errors. Sometimes I get booted back to the main menu on CSGO and sometimes it just sits at connecting to server.

Server is version 1.23.0.5

kraze appears to be correct here that you are using an invalid mapgroup. You should change your command line to use "mg_deathmatch", which is the one you appear to have set up. Additionally, you'll need to set game_type 0 and game_mode 0 to match the Classic Casual definition that you set up (IIRC).
