Actually I solved the issue by booting the VDS into Single mode and manually changing the root password.

Recovering root password
I seem to have changed the root password at some point on my VPs and ofcourse I don't remember it now and I can not login to the vps after I restarted. I tried to change system password but it still won't work and I really can't afford to lose the files I put on the VPS. Any knowhow to overcome this?
