Ping
We have been renting the Dragons-Lair for a while now with out any problems. But I now have a small question, our server is run on Inter-Nap Seattle and is Ping Boosted but for about the last 4 weeks our ping to the server has going from 40 to well over 100. Most of us run on High speed DSL and have never had a problem with this. I was wondering if there was anything changed on your end or maybe in our server it self?
I should also add that Verizon and Speakeasy have recently become lower-quality ISPs. This is because they are both rolling out their own backbones and do not yet have good connections with other backbones, so oftentimes traffic to and from other places has to take a very circuitous path.
Right now, for instance, Verizon is sending (and receiving) all traffic for at least some of its Seattle customers through LA / San Jose, which adds at least ~40ms of latency to our Seattle servers.
Speakeasy is in a state of flux as it tries to get cheaper bandwidth through free connections with other backbones, and tries to tweak its nationwide routing. Speakeasy used to use InterNAP bandwidth, which made it the fastest ISP, but it has now slid down to below the level of other ISPs such as Comcast in its attempt to lower costs. Speakeasy also owns GameDaemons, and is converting it over to its new network, and this is one reason that we've gotten so many GD customers switching to us recently.
