In general, HLDS/SrcDS running under Linux performs worse than HLDS under Windows, using more CPU power, giving higher pings, and producing less stable pings, due to the way the game was written. However, Linux is necessary to run 1000 FPS servers, and with modern hardware and customized kernels it runs nearly as well as Windows for other configurations.

Server types other than HLDS and Source run exclusively on Windows machines.
