Down Servers. Including mine. What's the deal?
It appears that a great percentage of the servers are down. I tried starting it and it came up then went back down.
I wan't to know if you guys are having some problems, and if you are, which it looks like you are, what are they and when can i expect my server to be back up?

Server Down 07/30/08:00 PST
They emailed me talking about Valve's Security Module has been hacked into and waiting for the patch from Valve later this evening.

Did you read the news I posted about an hour and a half before you posted here?

Also, did you get the email I sent to all renters at 8:35am this morning? It basically says the same thing as the news post.

i would rather have my server down for a day then have the machine that it was on get hacked...
We definitely aren't. From what I'm hearing, all the major server providers who are worth their salt are doing what we are doing.Anubis wrote:I think you guys are the only ones who took down all their HL servers. Kinda shitty to me.![]()
Even if we didn't, they were all being taken down "for us" anyway..
It just seems unlikely that someone is going to pick today to hack the servers. I mean, the security group found the exploit yesterday. How long do you think its actually been there? Probably a little longer than yesterday. So if they were going to be hacked, Im sure they would have been hacked already. I still think its shitty that NFo is like the only company I have seen so far to shutdown HL servers. Lets also think that if someone really wanted to; they could hack the servers anyways. Ive seen people do it (not to NFo servers, but Ive seen people hack and shutdown others servers before).
And according to the following link; the exploit has been known about since April 14th 2003.

So why shut down the servers? Just because the exploit was made even more public than it already was?

Yep, exactly.
There were no known implementations of the exploit until yesterday, when the discoverers of it back in April released an .exe. And their .exe is insanely easy to use -- great for all those script kiddies out there. Suddenly there was a serious problem.
When I got up this morning we had a couple dozen servers down, and it went downhill from there. We were forced to shut down all of them or lose access to all of our machines and risk an intruder getting himself access as well.

If you think about it, the machines NFo hosts our servers on aren't exactly cheap, would YOU take the risk of completely screwing very expensive machines that host servers for the paying customers, if you lose the servers not only do you lose a lot of money from customers, you lose the reputation of your company and that's a pretty big deal. It's all a matter of guaranteed 24 hours of downtime OR possibly weeks of downtime while they fix their machines.
I'd much rather enjoy 24 hours away from counter-strike/natural-selection and go to the mall with some friends or something
