configure and add maps linux
How can I add maps/configure files and such through gentoo linux?
Since It cannot be accessed through remote desktop I use ssh? I can't see the desktop correct?

Re: configure and add maps linux
A couple of ways of doing this include using the SSH command line to download maps directly to the server, and using SFTP to upload maps from your personal machine to the VDS.

If you are running CentOS you can connect through VNC. Otherwise all linux distro's require you connect through Shell. I use Ponderosa and WinSCP for all my linux needs.mattb wrote:But I can't connect using my remote desktop from yes I know to use ftp filezilla

Your picture shows your server's root folder. You can drag and drop files and folders to this from your local machine.

Totally different, actually.
Ponderosa is where you do all your commands, as WinSCP is for uploading and downloading files, as well as editing files.

Re: configure and add maps linux
You would need to navigate to the same folder that you start the server from through SSH. Generally, this will be /usr/steam/sourcebase/orangebox. Then, go to its mod and maps folder, and put the maps there.
With an unmanaged server, don't be afraid to poke around and investigate things, and to learn whatever you can on your own. That's what these are all about.

Exactly! I've learnt a lot about linux just playing around, and if I do manage to wreck something, then try and fix it myself. Also, you can just reformat your VDS if you can't figure it out to. So feel free to learn new things. I love linux now that I've learnt quite a few things.

Re: configure and add maps linux
Whats this about
In general, HLDS/SrcDS running under Linux performs worse (i.e., uses more CPU power, gives higher pings, and makes for less stable pings) than HLDS under win32, simply due to the way the game was written. However, Linux is necessary to run 1000 FPS servers, and with the latest hardware and kernel it runs nearly as good as Windows for other configurations. If you would prefer that your server run on a Linux platform, please let us know and we may be able to move you to one of our Linux machines at no cost to you.
Server types other than HLDS and Source currently are run exclusively on Windows machines.

The post that you are quoting is one that we made, yes. It is still generally accurate. Do you have a specific question about it?

Re: configure and add maps linux
I run 1000FPS CS 1.6 servers on my CentOS 5 VDS no issues at all. 950+ FPS at all times, never drops below. No reason to switch to Windows, unless that's what you prefer.

Re: configure and add maps linux
Yeah curious because I go on the steam/srcds forums and they talk highly about linux ubuntu, gentoo. And some have done research that linux was preferred linux over windows for performance. And I've used centOS before first time with gentoo and if you configure the kernel well it can work better then windows.Edge100x wrote:The post that you are quoting is one that we made, yes.
