Webserver download speed

Post by Spifft »

Hi,

My current fastDL host caps the players at 500-800kb/s. Most of us can download double those speeds on a constant basis. I was wondering if you guys have a cap as well, or if it's just limited to the clients connection.

Thanks

Hi,

What are the size of the files being downloaded? Also are they multiple people downloading the files at the same time? If so that may be the cause of your problem. 40+ people downloading large files at the same time from the same server their is most likely going to be couple who experience slow speeds.

The only real cap you would see from us would be:

'To limit the use of the webspace for illegal activities and for mirroring files, files over 200MB in size are subject to a throttle of 50 k/s per connection when downloaded through HTTP. FTP upload and download rates are similarly throttled at 100 k/s."

Well most maps we use are between 10-80mb. It works fast enough and no one complains, but the price I pay there is triple your lite plan here and I of course wouldn't mind saving money and having faster download times for the big maps over here and have it located in CA instead of TX.

Last question. You mentioned illegal activities like file mirroring. It crossed my mind to host a download mirror for fpsbanana.com on a few zombie escape maps. Would you consider this against your rules? If so what if I made a download mirror through my VPS?

Oh and my other provider has claimed that, "yes we cap the download speeds to 500kb/s to ensure quality in their service."

I am looking for, "we let them download as fast as their internet lets them!" lol.

I really hope this is how it's done here so I can just use the webhosting package instead of running it thru my VPS.

There won't be a cap here for files below 200MB, so your clients will be able to download as fast as their internet allows.

We do not allow mirroring,

"+ "Mirror" or host files on behalf of another website"
https://www.nfoservers.com/termsofservice.php

However, if you were to host it on your unmanaged VDS, like you said, that shouldn't be a problem. I personally wouldn't recommend it because of how big FPSbanana is. If people suck up so much bandwidth you may start to a performance drop on your servers not to mention your servers BW will start to go up. So you pay the money while all these other people get to suck your BW.
